On January 7, 1919 Bertha Christine Peterson was born to Oscar and Louisa (Anderson) Peterson in Osakis, MN. She married Milford "Miff" Gulbranson and after his passing was married to Floyd Lee. Bertha was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Alexandria and was in the Ladies Aid. She also belonged to the Alexandria Eagles Club.
Bertha worked most of her adult life. They operated the Gopher Drive In in Alexandria and for seven years the Gulbranson's lived in Starbuck, where they owned and operated a restaurant called Miff's CafAC.. They sold it and returned to Alexandria in 1958. Besides helping to run restaurants in Alexandria and Starbuck, Bertha also worked at other restaurants and food service kitchens in and around Alexandria over the years. Some of the places she worked include the Brass Lantern Restaurant, Elden's Grocery, Knute Nelson Home, Bethany Home, and the Douglas County Hospital. Most of the time she was a Baker or Head Cook.
Bertha enjoyed being with friends and she had lots of them. When she was young she bowled in a league. In later years she enjoyed playing Bingo, and she was always ready to drop by and pick up a friend or two who needed a ride. After retiring from work outside the home, she baked at home for friends who loved her pies and donuts. She also offered rooms for rent to Alex Tech School students in the remodeled basement of her home.
Bertha was a thoughtful, positive thinking person and she always had good things to say about people. She passed these attributes on to her family. They will miss her deeply.
She is survived by her children, Phyllis (James) Scott of Maple Falls, WA, Gene (Susan) Gulbranson of Bellingham, WA and Vernon Gulbranson of Alexandria, MN; 4 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; many nieces and nephews.
