Life History for Donald Pollard
Don Pollard, age 80 of Osakis entered the peace of Heaven on Friday evening, August 10, 2012 from the VA Hospital in St. Cloud, MN.
On September 14, 1931 a baby boy named Donald David was born to Edward and Mathilda (Michels) Pollard, Sr. He attended school in Osakis and graduated with the Class of 1949. Don worked for the family grain business until his induction into the US Army in 1952 during the Korean War. He was trained to serve in the medical corps at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX and was then stationed at the 279th General Hospital in Osaka, Japan. Upon his honorable discharge in 1954, Don returned to Minnesota and attended the MN School of Business. He then returned to manage the Pollard Elevator in Nelson, MN. After the sale of that business, Don drove grain trucks for Pollard Mill & Elevator of Osakis for thirteen years. Don then drove a passenger van for Bursch Travel and also the van for Douglas County veterans to Minneapolis and St. Cloud. He also worked from 1994 until his retirement in 2006 for the Carlos State Park system as their greens keeper. On June 15, 1985 Don married Joan Bodanski Chapman.
Don had many interests and hobbies. He enjoyed working in the yard and mowing grass, keeping everything looking well manicured. He also liked to go deer hunting and play cards as well as listen to classical music. He was a member of the Osakis VFW Post # 7902 and had served twice as Post Commander and was also 5th District Commander. He was also a former member of the Knights of Columbus.
Don is survived by his wife of 27 years, Joan Pollard of Osakis; stepchildren, Connie (Daniel) Martin of Benson, Steve Chapman of Polson, MT, Sharon Drum of Alexandria and Julie Chapman of Chesapeake, VA; 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; a brother, Edward Pollard of Alexandria and a sister, Joan Louvaris of Montreal, Canada; several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Evelyn Vogel and Darleen Voigt.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 16 at 10:30 am at the Immaculate Conception Church in Osakis with Fr. David Petron officiating. Musicians were the church funeral choir. Interment was at the East Evergreen Cemetery in Osakis with honorary pallbearers the Osakis VFW Post # 7902. Active pallbearers were Keith and Karl Chapman, Andrew and Erich Martin, Shane, Kyle and Darren Drum.
