Donald Sammons

Donald Sammons, age 83 of Osakis died on Wednesday, May 13,2009 at the Pine Villa Nursing Home in Melrose, MN.
Donald Dwaine Sammons was born on August 18, 1925 in Osakis, MN to Lester and Ethel (Christensen) Sammons. He went to work for the railroad once his schooling was done and then during WWII, Don served his country in the US Navy from 1944-1946 as a Fireman, 1st Class. He returned home after his time in the service and after working for a time at a bakery and a creamery, was hired by Alexandria Concrete Company. On April 21, 1948 Don married Cornelia Coller in Alexandria, MN. Don drove trucks for Alex Concrete for over 38 years. He started by driving gravel trucks and then worked up to driving the large concrete trucks. After retiring in 1990, they moved to Osakis in 1992.
Don was an honest, hard working man of simple tastes, very content to be home with his family who were his pride and joy. He enjoyed working on mechanical projects in his garage, listening to country music, and playing his harmonica or guitar. He liked a good, funny story and always wore a big smile. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Cornelia Sammons of Osakis; children, Richard (Betty) Sammons of Manor, TX, Bonita Sammons of Osakis, Michael (Paula) Sammons of Andover, Linda (Ron) Haabala of Port Angeles, WA, Nancy Sammons of Savage, MN; 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Elva (Mike) Cowdery of Osakis, Jessie Hobart; and two brothers, Chuck and Dean Sammons.
Preceding him in death are his parents, a son, David and a brother, Eugene Sammons.
Services were held for Donald on Saturday, May 16 at 2:00 pm at the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tim Sutton officiating. Interment was at the Gordon Pleasant Hill Cemetery in rural Osakis. Casketbearers included Mike Cowdery, Michael Sammons, Ron and Chase Haabala, and Scott Shaffer.
