Ellen Kay Bangtson

July 31, 1940 — July 27, 2023

Osakis

Ellen Bangtson, 82, of Osakis passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 27, 2023.

Ellen Kay Handke was born July 31, 1940, in Marshfield, Wisconsin to Esther and Walter Handke. She was a graduate of St. Charles High School and Mankato State with a degree of Bachelor of Arts. She married Charles D. Bangtson on March 9, 1963, in St. Charles, MN.

The Bangtson’s moved to Osakis in 1968 where they raised their four children, Brian, David, Karin, and Julie. Ellen had several jobs in the community including Dr. Leckband’s office and the First National Bank of Osakis.

Music was one of Ellen’s greatest passions in life, and her musical talents touched the lives of many people. She was a gifted piano teacher and accompanist to many students, in addition to playing for many weddings and funerals. Playing the piano was still a part of her daily routine.

Ellen was a grace-filled, selfless person who treasured her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter. She was very proud of their accomplishments and loved being their #1 fan. She always put her family first.

A hidden talent of Ellen’s was her knitting, sewing and needlework. She always had several projects in the works, all of which were treasured gifts to family, friends and as donations to the community and church.  She also enjoyed doing various kinds of puzzles and enjoyed birdwatching.

Ellen was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Osakis, where she devoted many years of her talents as an organist, choir director, secretary, Sunday School teacher, and committee member.

As an animal-lover, she donated graciously to the Humane Society where she also adopted several cats who were her loving companions.

Ellen is survived by her children, David Bangtson, Karin Bangtson, Julie (Paul) Backes; brother, William (Judy) Handke; grandchildren, Elliot Habas, Sarah Habas (Andy Hein), Mariah Backes, Justin Bangtson, Grant Backes (Paige Nelson), Jacob Backes; great-grandchild, Paislee Backes; and several nieces and nephews.

Ellen is preceded in death by her parents, Esther and Walter Handke; husband, Charles Bangtson; and son, Brian Bangtson.
