Hazel Steffens

August 23, 1927 — August 21, 2006

Hazel Steffens, age 78 of Osakis, formerly of Rogers, passed away at her home early Monday morning, August 21, 2006.
Hazel Pauline Baker was born on August 23 in 1927. She was raised in Mandan, ND until the age of nine when she moved with her family to San Antonio, TX. She met and married Alvin Steffens when he returned from the service after WWII. They moved to Minneapolis and Hazel cared for foster children for many years. She figured out that over the years she had helped care for over 140 babies. She moved to Osakis after her husband died in 1992 and enjoyed living out on the north side of Lake Osakis.
She was a member of St. Martins, now known as Mary, Queen of Peace parish in Rogers and was active in the Christian Mothers and working for the various church dinners and festivals. Hazel had many interest and hobbies. She liked to be outdoors and especially enjoyed boating, gardening, watching the birds and sitting on her deck overlooking the lake. She had raised chickens and had horses while living on their hobby farm and also made many beautiful craft and sewing projects. She was a patient person who could sit and paint pretty ceramic Christmas villages. She also liked to crochet and work on crossword puzzles.
Hazel is survived by her children, Matthew (Ruth) Steffens of Forest Lake, Marty (Reynee) Steffens of Alexandria, Karen (Brad) Hawkins of Rogers; 8 grandchildren, Keith, Amanda, Ashley, Andrew, Nicole, Charles, Spencer and Mason. She had one great granson, Alpha.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Alvin and a daughter, Milissa Schumacher.
Funeral services for Hazel will be held on Friday, August 25, 2006 at 11:00 am at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Rogers with Fr. Mark Moriarty officiating. Visitation hours will be on Thursday, Aug. 24 from 4 -7 pm at the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis and one hour before the service at the church. Interment of her ashes will be in the St. Martin's cemetery in Rogers, MN. Arr. with Roy-Hetland Funeral Home, Osakis.
