Life History for Luella Omlid
Luella Omlid, who just turned 90 on May 23, passed away at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, MN on Tuesday, May 26, 2009.
Luella Viola Eliason was the youngest of thirteen children born to Henry and Carrie (Narveson) Eliason. She was born May 23, 1919 in Goodridge, MN. On September 1, 1938 she was married to Oliver Omlid in Trail, MN. They farmed there and in Plumber, MN and then moved to the Thief River Falls area, remaining there until 1965. Next they moved to the Iron Range, where Luella worked at the Arrow Shirt factory in Eveleth, MN. Luella moved to California in 1968 and found work at the Bell Helmet factory. Moving back to Minnesota in 1981, Luella settled in Osakis and started working as a cook and dietary aid at the Community Memorial Home, retiring in 1999 at the age of 80 years.
She was a member of the Osakis Lutheran Church and belonged to the Rebecca Circle. She was also a foster grandparent for the elementary students at Osakis Public School. She was always spry and stayed very active. She loved to work in her flower garden or go on the pontoon and go fishing. Luella loved to cook and bake and her family will always remember her mouth-watering caramel rolls. Coming from a large family she learned how to can as a young woman and continued to do lots of canning each fall, especially her home grown tomatoes. She was a kind and loving mother and grandma who enjoyed being with her family and grandchildren. Blessed be her memory.
She is survived by her children, Loren Omlid of Bismark, ND, Barbara Richards of Chippewa Falls, WI, Jan (Rod) Seward of Carlos, MN, Linda (Deone) Goettl of Cornell, WI and Marlene (Wayne) Kuitunen of Eveleth, MN; 16 grandchildren; 29 great, grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Luella is preceded by her parents, her husband, Oliver who died in 1985, a daughter, Judith Sandretto, an infant granddaughter, Janine Sandretto; 2 great, granddaughters, Heather Nicole Schultz and Stormy Marie Sandretto; son-in-law, LaVern Richards, Jr.; 12 siblings, Lloyd Eliason, Caroline Johnson, Alma Hyland, Clary and Edward Eliason, Clara Johnson, Esther Omlid, Kate Laurent, Ida Omlid, Elner and Herbin Eliason and Loyda Jones.
A memorial services was held for Luella on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 11:00 am at the Osakis Lutheran Church with Rev. Ron Calvert officiating. Musicians were Ellen Bangtson and Dana Hetland. Inurnment services will be held at a later date at the Eveleth City Cemetery in Eveleth, MN.
Arrangements are by the Roy-Hetland Funeral Home in Osakis, MN.
