LIFE HISTORY for SHIRLEY SCHULTZ
Shirley Schultz, age 74 of Osakis died unexpectedly in an automobile accident on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 while traveling with friends near Chisholm, MN.
Shirley Ann Schultz was born on July 9, 1932 in Osakis, MN to William and Enola (Larson) Schultz. She graduated from Osakis High School in 1949 and her first professional job was as a medical technician in Arlington, MN. After additional schooling, Shirley received her elementary education degree at the University of MN and taught grades two and six at the public elementary school in Arlington. Shirley continued her own education and received another degree from the U of M in library science. She took a job as the media specialist at Alexandria Technical College and worked there for over 30 years. She was a member of the Osakis Lutheran Church, where she had served as a deacon and also helped review the constitution of the church. She belonged to the MN Retired Teacher's Association, the Douglas County Planning and Zoning Commission and the Osakis Heritage Center. One of Shirley's greatest satisfactions however came from her 35 years serving in local politics. She was the long time Democratic chair for the Douglas County DFL and in addition to her many hours of volunteer time, Shirley was also a legislative lobbyist for education. Making lasting friendships came naturally to Shirley and she worked hard to keep and maintain the many networks of friends that she had made over the years. Some of her other interests included reading, entertaining and traveling. She especially enjoyed her season tickets to the Timberwolves games. Shirley loved country living, her cats and also feeding all of the various wildlife that lived around her farm. She was a loving sister, aunt and volunteer who will be dearly missed by her family and many friends. Blessed be her memory.
Shirley is survived by her two brothers, Lynn Schultz and Larry (Jan) Schultz, all of Osakis; 3 nieces and 3 nephews, Becky (Greg) Skudlarek of Garfield, MN, Jennifer (Mark) Widstrom of Duluth, Jackie Schultz of Osakis, Mike (Cindy) Schultz of Ankeny, IA, Mathew (Cheryl) Schultz of Ham Lake, Karl (Mindy) Schultz of Osakis. She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister-in-law, JoAnn Schultz.
Memorial services for Shirley will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2006 at 1:00 pm at the Osakis Lutheran Church with Rev. Ron Calvert officiating. Honorary pallbearers are Dale & Dorothy Maus, Hank & Stella Bender, Bob & Marlys Ferris, Harvey & Susan Kranzler, Paul & Toni McCarten, Dan & Barb Sandell.
A luncheon will follow the service and will be served in the fellowship by the ladies of her church circle. Memorial arrangements are handled by the Roy-Hetland Funeral in Osakis, MN.
