LIFE HISTORY for SILAS
On July 9, 1930 at a remote farmstead near Kenmare, North Dakota, a son was born to Silas and Grace (Nash) Naas, Sr. They named him Silas, Jr. He was raised on this farm and learned many of life's lessons, such as a love for the Lord and the benefits of a good day's work. He attended country school, often riding the three and a half miles there on horseback. This began a lifelong appreciation and affection for horses. During his teen years Silas attended Kenmare High School and then enrolled at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. His next schooling would take place at the Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science in Milwaukee, WI. Silas proudly completed his Mortuary Science degree and became a licensed mortician/embalmer and funeral director. He excelled in this his chosen field and was first hired by a funeral home in Fargo, ND and then one in Fergus Falls, MN. In 1972 Silas moved to Alexandria, MN as a funeral director employed by the Anderson Funeral Home. He worked there for many years and then finished his career working with the Petermeier Funeral Home in Alexandria until his retirement. Silas quickly acclimated himself to the Alexandria area and the many people he served. His keen memory for faces and names served him well as he helped hundreds of families suffering the loss of their loved ones. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria, MN.
When Si purchased some acreage near the Carlos State Park, many friends and neighbors received invitations to accompany him on rides in his horse and buggy and/or one of his sleighs. He enjoyed both riding and driving horses. Although his favorite breed was Arabians, he was very proud of his well-trained pair of Morgans and spoiled them accordingly. Si loved the lakes area 'horse community' and made many friends over the years. Another pastime which brought him pleasure was listening to classical and what he called "good Christian music." His favorite composers were Bach and Mozart. He found the beauty in people, animals and nature and reflected that in his caring compassion and interest for others. He will be lovingly remembered by those whose lives he touched.
Silas is survived by his brothers, Wayne 'Webb' and Renee Trent Naas of Arlington, VA, and Merrill 'Wally' and Margaret Naas of Eden Prairie, MN; 2 nieces, Linda (Scott) Smith and Patti (Steve) Belrose, and a nephew, Jeff (Jennifer) Nass; several great nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Silas, Sr, and Grace Naas.
