LIFE HISTORY for BARBARA MALVIN
Barbara Malvin of rural Carlos passed away peacefully at the age of 87 years on Sunday, April 19, 2020 in the comfort of her home with family by her side.
Barbara Ann Mayem was born on September 15, 1932 in Seattle, WA to Alvin and Margaret (Eaton) Mayem. She attended Garden City High School and graduated with the Class of 1950. She lost her heart to a handsome young man named William ‘Bill’ Malvin and they were soon married on November 12, 1950 in Garden City, MN. They started their new life living at the local telephone company in Vernon Center, MN and Barb would cover running the switchboards when needed. Then they moved to a farm outside of town (in 1955) where Barb enjoyed living in the country and raising their five children. Barb took a secretarial job working at the local fertilizer plant until 1973 when the family relocated to a farm near Carlos, MN. In addition to running the farm, the Malvin’s also owned and managed the mill and grain elevator in Carlos for three years. When Douglas County Hospital needed help in their dietary wing, Barb was quickly hired. Next she moved to the ER Admitting Office and finally worked as support staff doing secretarial work for Outpatient Services, retiring in 1996.
Barb was a member of the United Methodist Church in Osakis and Alexandria. She belonged to the DFL Party and volunteered each summer at their County Fair booth. Barb always kept busy, whether working in her garden or making beautiful crocheted blankets to share with family and friends. She liked to do crossword puzzles to keep her mind sharp and also did lots of reading. Over the years, she was a great fan at her own children’s many sporting events and then later for her grandchildren’s many activities. She loved to spoil her many grand-babies and always made sure all her family knew they were loved. Summertime travels to various State Parks in their classic ’39 Buick always brought a smile, as did the many camping trips they took over the years. She showered her family with unconditional love and kindness and left a legacy of memories for them to cherish. She leaves behind her loving husband of 69 years, Bill Malvin of Carlos; her children, Tom (Paula) Malvin of Dilworth, Kristine (Scott Andersen) Parks of Osakis, David (Lynn) Malvin of Alexandria; daughters-in-law, Patricia Malvin of Verndale and Karen (Ross) Winger of Carlos; 21 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 3 great, great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Michael and John Malvin; a great granddaughter, Kjersten Malvin; two brothers, Richard ‘Dickie’ Mayem and Edward ‘Eddie” Wendt.
