LeRoy 'Bud' Manders

September 28, 1925 — November 23, 2020

Osakis

LeRoy ‘Bud’ Manders of Osakis passed away early on Monday, Nov. 23, 2020 at the Galeon in Osakis, MN at the age of 95 years.

On September 28, 1925 a son was born to Lewis and Tena (Hendricks) Manders in Osakis, MN.  They named him LeRoy Edward, but he soon was given the nickname, Bud.  He grew up on a farm north of Osakis until the family moved to Long Prairie in 1937.  In 1941, they again relocated, this time to Forest Hills, LA, which is where Bud graduated from high school.  In 1943, Bud would serve his country during WWII in the U S Navy.  He became an Arial Gunnery Instructor and was honorably discharged on June 6, 1946.  Returning to civilian life, Bud married his sweetheart, Madlyn Wendorf on August 16, 1947 in Glenwood, MN.  Bud was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone, working in their accounting department.  He was very proud of receiving the company’s Bronze Medal award for having saved a woman’s life. Over the years, the Manders lived in Minneapolis, Golden Valley and Plymouth.  In 1957 they purchased a cabin on Lake Osakis and enjoyed many weekends up at the lake until their retirement in 1983, when they made Osakis their home.  Bud became involved in many local organizations, such as the Osakis Sportsmans Club, the Osakis Lake Association and was a charter member of the Osakis VFW Post #7902.  He was also a member of the Osakis Lutheran Church and belonged to the Telephone Pioneers group.

Bud was an avid fisherman and spent many hours out enjoying the lake and catching fish.  He also had an amazing talent for making friends and making others feel at ease.  Bud was a great story-teller, always ready with a story or a joke to lighten the mood.  He loved his family dearly and will remembered with a smile by all who knew him.

Bud is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Madlyn Manders of Osakis; a daughter, Linda Manders of Alexandria and several nieces and nephews.  He is preceded by his parents, a son, Bruce Manders (1970) and siblings, Robert Manders and Betty Spaine.

Memorial services for Bud will be held privately.  Inurnment at Lakeside Cemetery in Osakis, MN with full military honors by Osakis VFW Post #7902 Honor Guard.
