Lewis Mohawk

January 17, 1937 — March 3, 2021

Alexandria, MN

Lewis F. Mohawk, age 84, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 3, 2021, at his home in Alexandria, MN, surrounded by loved ones after a hard-fought battle with leukemia.

Lewis was born January 17, 1937, to Lewis and Alyce (Whitman-Kyallquist) Mohawk in Alexandria, MN. He graduated in 1955 from Alexandria High School. That fall he attended the Minneapolis School of Art on a scholarship he earned after submitting three of his representative works.

On April 19, 1957, he married his sweetheart, Patricia Stoeckel. Lewis began working for Sheldon’s Panting Company.  He began an electrical apprenticeship, working for Cold Spring Electric. After working as a journeyman for Al’s Electric, Lewis studied nights, earning his Master Electrician’s license, passing the exam on his first attempt.  Later, as the foreman during the construction of the Monticello Power Plant, he met his future business partner, Larry Weaver. They then formed St. Cloud Electric.

In 1975, Lewis and his partner purchased the North Star Resort on Mille Lacs Lake. Years later Lewis and Patricia sold the resort to their son, Mark and his wife Katie.

Lewis, a strong family man, especially loved being around his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was a proud member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Nation in Wisconsin.  His love of nature, the outdoors, all things hunting and fishing was reflected in his artwork: painting, mosaic, carving, and stain glass. His art was an integral part of his life and cherished by many. In 2007, Lewis’ artwork was displayed at the Andria Theater in Alexandria MN. Lewis was a passionate fisherman and bow hunter. With his bow, he shot a bull elk on a dead run through the heart.

Lewis was also a life-long fan of the Minnesota Vikings.

His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, especially his wife, Patricia Mohawk, of Alexandria, children; Mark (Katie) Mohawk of Onamia, MN, Juli (David) Ilchert of Alexandria, Shiela (Jeff) Noble of Big Sandy, TN, and Peter (Catherine) Mohawk of Barnum, MN; 8 grandchildren: Blake, Spencer, Alysa, Scarlett (Leo), Carolyn, Alix, David Lewis, and Crystal; 4 great-grandchildren: Greyson Myriam, Yschizkel, Malakhi; siblings James (Luellen) Mohawk of Libby, MT, and Janette Brower of Grand Rapids, MN, brother-in-law Pastor Onni Putikka of Grand Rapids, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; siblings: Arlita Putikka, Ronald (Ronnie), and Wilfred (Billy), and grandson, Rylan Saez.

Lewis’ family would like to give their eternal gratitude to the Douglas County Hospice Society, and Dr. Raflores who made this journey more bearable.

A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Memories and condolences may be left under his -tribute page at www.royhetland.com.
