Lorraine ‘Ivy’ Audrey (Iverson) Nomeland, was born on February 19, 1933, in Minneapolis, MN to Lawrence A. Iverson and Rose O. (Johnson) Iverson. Ivy fondly recalled her early childhood in Minneapolis, going to Sunday school, church, kindergarten, the movies, shopping downtown, riding the streetcar, and visiting family and friends. In 1938, Ivy moved with her parents to the family farm in Osakis, MN. She worked on the farm beside her parents, siblings, and grandparents. Ivy began her lifelong passion of education at School District 101, where she attended through 8th grade; and graduated from Osakis Public School in 1950. In 1953, Ivy graduated from Saint Cloud Teachers College and taught 2nd grade in Stillwater, MN. She was proud to be the first in her family to graduate from college.
On February 20, 1954, Ivy married James K. Nomeland at Salem Lutheran Church. They made their home in Osakis and had three children. They taught their children the love of God, importance of learning, and value of community. Ivy and Jim opened their home to extended family and friends and hosted several foreign exchange students and teachers from all over the world. Ivy retired in 1995 after teaching more than 30 years at Osakis Public School, where she taught all elementary grades. She was active in her community at Osakis Lutheran Church, a past president of the VFW Auxiliary, a board member for Osakis Public School, and a board member for Galeon. She enjoyed family history, church, entertaining, traveling, reading, and book club.
