Life History for Mavis -

Mavis Maher, age 86 of Osakis passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 5, 2021 at the Galeon in Osakis, MN.

A beautiful baby girl was born on February 3, 1935 to Otto and Mabel (Torkelson) Svee in Alexandria, MN.  She graduated from Alexandria High School in 1953 and married the love of her life, David Maher.  They moved to live on a farm south of Osakis where they farmed and raised their three daughters.  Mavis also worked at Fingerhut in Sauk Centre, MN as a sewer for many years.  She later joined the Jeni-O team, working on the production line at the plant in Melrose.   Mavis was a member of the Immaculate Conception parish in Osakis, MN.

Mavis had many hobbies and interests.  She loved to be in the kitchen, cooking, baking and putting up jars of goodies from her garden each season.  She enjoyed people and loved to be in a crowd of dedicated Bingo players, ready to call out a win.  She also loved old-time music and watching summer parades.  Neighborhood card parties and celebrations were additional activities she looked forward to.  Her grandchildren always made her smile and she will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Ruth Niehoff of Osakis, Patricia Sorbe of Forest Lake, Barb (Phil) Merten of Sauk Centre; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Jim (Connie) Svee and Donald (Maxine) Svee, all of Alexandria, MN; many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband, David; grandchildren, David and Daniel Merten; son-in-law, Bruce Niehoff; three brothers, Ed, Maynard and Stanley Svee; three sisters, Beverly Botzet, Helen Zentgraf and Ardell Maher.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Thursday, July 8 at 11 am at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis with Fr. David Petron officiating and Shana Miller as crossbearer. The reader is Kathy Heid and giftbearers are Nicole Tripp, Kim Niehoff and Jamie Merten.  Interment is at the Calvary Cemetery in Osakis with pallbearers, Mike Kugel, Jamie Messer, James Miller, Ken Marthaler, Jax & Ryen Tripp, Ray & Bob Maher.
